Insects see something different

Humans see purple “flowers.” Hummingbirds and butterflies are not fooled. They see nectar rich white flowers surrounded by an unimportant dark background. The tiny white flowers only last a day or two. Bouganvillea brasiliensis.

When ready to be pollinated, the Bougainvillea flower opens up white. Usually only one flower is open at a time. Immature flowers blend in to the background, as if to help the pollinator focus only on the urgent work at hand.
